Copper Gallery × North Miami CRA

This mural for Copper Gallery in North Miami grew from a concept proposed by Geo Darder, CEO of Copper Gallery, to the North Miami Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). After seeing work I had previously created for the CRA offices, Geo wanted to explore a related visual language for the gallery while introducing a new layer of cultural and symbolic meaning inspired by the Orisha Oshun.

From that starting point, I developed a geometric composition built around a spiral emerging from five points—a number traditionally associated with Oshun. From this center, the pattern expands outward into an increasingly complex field of interconnected shapes, suggesting origin, movement, creation, and multiplicity.

Color became another important part of the visual language. Yellow and golden tones reference Oshun, while layers of copper connect the composition directly to the identity of Copper Gallery. Rather than depicting the Orisha literally, I wanted her presence to be embedded within the structure, rhythm, and color of the mural—allowing the symbolism to reveal itself gradually within an abstract contemporary composition.

The mural was made possible through a grant awarded by the North Miami CRA, with the support of Arts & Culture Director Michelle McKoy. The work was created primarily with spray paint, with invaluable assistance from fellow artist Nate Petit-Due during its production.

Projects like this reflect one of the things I value most about public art: the opportunity to bring together contemporary visual language, cultural memory, symbolism, and the identity of a particular place. The result becomes more than an image on a wall—it becomes part of the environment and part of the ongoing cultural conversation of the community.
